Wilderness Trail
Travel the Wilderness RoadThe Wilderness Road is Virginia's Heritage Migration Route. The sites and exhibits along the way tell the epic story of the early American migration as colonists moved from the east coast settlements through the Appalachian Mountains. Frontier forts along the way provided shelter for the early pioneers.
The trail begins in Winchester, Virginia, and runs through Bristol and then west through the Cumberland Gap and into Kentucky. A separate branch runs down into the Carolinas. From 1775 through 1810 nearly 300,000 settlers moved along the Wilderness Road through Virginia and into the territories.
Today's travelers will find museums, living history villages, and other sites that help them understand the significance of the Wilderness Road and the hardy people who traveled it to build a new life.
